3 Days in Dagestan

A ready-made three-day route through Makhachkala, Sulak Canyon, Sarykum, and historic Derbent.

How to plan the trip

Spend day one in Makhachkala, day two at Sarykum and Sulak Canyon, and day three in Derbent. This shows three distinct sides of the region without overloading each day.

  • Do not combine Sulak and Derbent in one day.
  • Arrange a car or organised tour for day two.
  • Leave extra time for traffic and mountain roads.

Day 1 - Makhachkala

Visit the National Museum, the Central Juma Mosque, and the seafront. In clear weather, finish at Tarki-Tau near sunset.

Day 2 - Sarykum and Sulak Canyon

Leave early with a car, driver, or organised tour. Visit Sarykum before the hottest part of the day, then continue to the canyon. Use safe official viewpoints and confirm road conditions.

Day 3 - Derbent

Begin at Naryn-Kala, walk through the old historic quarters, visit the Juma Mosque, and finish at the promenade. Wear comfortable shoes and start early in summer.
