Derbent City Guide

A guide to Naryn-Kala, the old historic quarters, the Juma Mosque, Peter the Great House, and the seafront.

How to plan the trip

Explore the historic area on foot from top to bottom: begin at the citadel, continue through the historic quarters, and finish the evening by the sea.

  • Allow at least two hours for Naryn-Kala.
  • Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes in the historic quarters.
  • Start early in summer.

Morning - Naryn-Kala Citadel

Arrive early, especially in summer. Allow at least two hours for the walls, museum areas, and views over Derbent and the Caspian Sea.

Afternoon - historic quarters and the Juma Mosque

Walk downhill through the historic quarters. The stone lanes can be uneven, so wear comfortable shoes. Follow mosque dress rules and respect prayer.

Evening - museum and seafront

Visit Peter the Great House if opening hours fit your schedule, then continue to Nizami Park and the promenade. Reserve dinner in advance during the high season.
