Gunib and Surroundings Guide

A guide to Upper Gunib, Chokh, Gamsutl, Aivazovsky Viewpoint, and Saltinsky Waterfall.

How to plan the trip

Use Gunib as a base for several days. Mountain roads and walking routes take longer than map estimates, so do not pack every sight into one day.

  • Leave for Gamsutl early in the morning.
  • Carry water and footwear with good grip.
  • After rain, confirm access to Saltinsky Waterfall.

Base yourself in Gunib

Spend the first day in Upper Gunib, the museum, and Aivazovsky Viewpoint. This gives you time to adjust to the mountain roads and altitude.

Chokh and Gamsutl

Leave early and allow a full day. The final route to Gamsutl is on foot, with steep and rocky sections. Carry water, sun protection, and a warm layer.

Saltinsky Waterfall

Water levels depend on rainfall and season. Do not enter the gorge during rain or when flooding is possible, and confirm road conditions locally.
